INSECT VILLAGE & BOTANICAL GARDENS

Branding & Environmental Design

Visual Identity • Wayfinding

Role: Graphic Designer

This project challenged me to design a wayfinding map and brand identity for a fictional zoo, Insect Village & Botanical Garden. My goal was to create a system that felt kid-friendly, approachable, and visually cohesive, while maintaining clarity and organization for visitors.

I developed a series of custom insect icons using principles of figure-ground, closure, symmetry, and radiation to create simplified, recognizable forms. The brand identity uses a bright, nature-inspired palette of greens and yellows paired with playful typography, creating a visual language that feels both educational and fun.

Ideation

From Sketch to System

This project began with digital sketches exploring how insects could fit within a leaf-shaped form for visual consistency. When the designs proved too detailed for a map legend, I simplified them into clean, hexagon-based icons that still captured each insect’s essence. The hexagonal shape felt more intuitive and kid-friendly, reinforcing the zoo’s playful tone and becoming a unifying design element throughout the map.

Guiding the Experience

The final deliverables for Insect Village & Botanical Garden include a detailed wayfinding map featuring uniquely named exhibits, restaurants, and attractions. Each area is paired with a custom insect icon designed within a hexagonal system for consistency and recognition.
